(R. Barnes, May 2006: These notes are a transcription of a transcription (by my father, A C Barnes) of a document prepared for (or by?) the Fordell Institute. My father’s typing has been scanned, OCR converted to text in Word 2000, and corrected. The original documents are in the Whanganui Regional Museum, in the WR Barnes Papers. Notes in italics are later additions by me. I’m have not been sure which “errors” to correct, so some have been left and others corrected. There are a few places where there seems to be a few words missing – I’ve marked these by [?]. Footnotes are mine). Hannah Barnes, 1860-1939, was the daughter of John Old (1821-1896) and Mary Jane (nee) Knuckey (1828-1887). John and Mary met on the Gertrude as they emigrated with their family to New Plymouth in 1841 and were married in 1845 in New Plymouth. Hannah was the eighth child, and seventh daughter of this couple, if we include the first two daughters who didn’t survive beyond one day
