Post-it notes are a kind of “unofficial update”. Unless the database owner forbids it, you can place a note into their record, clearly distinguished from “official” information, giving extra information or correcting mistakes. When you create a Post-it note then an email is sent to the record owner.
Open the record and click the [Post it] button. This opens a page to create a Post It note: -
You can write any text you like. You cannot of course actually change tonyc’s record of Hannah OLD’s year of birth, but at least anybody who is looking at this record will see your disagreement.
When you click [Create] the note will be created, and an email sent to tonyc noting that that a Post-it has been created on this record.
In this case, the email sent to tonyc will have subject: -
NZGDB: a
Post-it has been added to OLD, Hannah(1861-1939)
And message: -

Year of birth should be 1860.
Post-it notes appear at the top of the fact list. Their yellow background clearly distinguishes them from other facts: -
As with any fact, you can click the fact tag to open a page to see the fact and any details: -
Only the record owner sees the record with all four action buttons.
The Post-it author (robertb) will see all buttons except [Accept]
General users will see only the [Return] button.
Thus only the owner and author can update or delete this note. The owner can also [Accept] the note, which will convert it into a normal note that only he can edit. Any user can email the note author.
If you do not want Post-it notes attached to your databases, then edit your profile and check the option No Post-it’s: -
This will prevent the [Post it] button from appearing on page GDB2.
If you are happy to allow Post-its, but don’t want to be bothered with the emails, then check No Notification for Postits.
